1G
First generation of mobile networks technology which were built to provide basic voice services to customers.
2G
Second generation of mobile networks technology which enabled highly secured voice and text messaging services as well as limited data services.
3G
Third generation of mobile networks technology, which provided the foundation of mobile Internet.
4G
Fourth generation of mobile networks technology, which enabled fast mobile Internet, paving the way for VoIP, smart devices, IoT and more.
5G Demonstration Projects/5GDP
The 5G Demonstration Projects aims to facilitate, develop and foster the potential of 5G during this planning phase. It also aims to create awareness on how 5G technology may be used for various industries prior to commercial rollout.
Download speed
Download speed is the speed that information on the Internet (e.g., text and graphics) is transferred to your device; that is, how long it takes your device to load websites, videos and download files to display on your screen.
Fixed Broadband
High speed Internet connection that beams through radio signals.
Fixed telecommunications
Refers to home voice and data services, provided by a wired network, for example landline phone and fixed broadband
Fixed Wireless Access (FWA)
FWA refers to methods of providing wireless Internet access to homes or businesses without laying down fiber and cables to provide last mile connectivity.
Fixed-Mobile Convergence
Term used to describe integrated connectivity between fixed and wireless telecommunications network. Fixed Mobile Convergence is used by service providers to provide seamless switching between a wireless and local network for mobile users.
Gigabits per second (Gbps)
Gbps is a measure of data transmission rate (speed) equivalent to approximately 1 billion bits per second.
Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR 4.0)
The fourth Industrial Revolution, characterised by high automation, digitisation and application of artificial intelligence across industries.
Internet of Things (IoT)
The concept of basically connecting any device with an on and off switch via the Internet (and/or to each other). This includes everything from smartphones, coffee makers, washing machines, headphones, lamps, wearable devices, cars and almost everything.
Latency
Latency is the amount of time it takes for a small packet of information sent from your device to reach another device on the Internet, and then return back to you.
Machine to machine (M2M)
M2M is direct communication between devices using any communications channel, including wired and wireless.
Megabits per second (Mbps)
Mbps is a measure of Internet bandwidth. In simple terms, bandwidth is the download rate of your Internet connection.
Mobile Broadband
Internet connection delivered over a mobile network via devices like dongles, pocket wifi, data SIM.
Mobile telecommunications
Refers to voice and data services which may be used on the go, provided over a wireless network.
Quality of Experience (QoE)
Measurement to determine how well the network is satisfying the consumer’s requirements. As opposed to Quality of Service (QoS) which measures solely network and media performance, without consumer experience considered.
Refarming
Act of repurposing a frequency that was initially allocated to one technology for another.
Satellite Broadband
Internet access powered through communication satellites.
Spectrum
All radio wave frequencies; all wireless communications travel through the air using specific frequencies i.e spectrum.
Sunsetting 3G
When mobile service provider shuts off the cellular infrastructure required to operate communication devices based on 3G technology, i.e UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service), EVDO (Evolution-Data Optimised).
Upload speed
Upload speed is the speed that your computer can transfer or send information to the Internet.
